How Brick Quantity Is Calculated
Brick estimation starts by calculating wall area (height × length in square feet), then dividing by the face area of a single brick. A standard US brick is 8" × 4" (2.22" thick with mortar), giving a face area of 32 square inches or 0.222 square feet. That works out to roughly 6.75 bricks per square foot — commonly rounded to 7 bricks per square foot as a planning estimate.
Always add a waste factor of 5–10% on top of the calculated quantity. Bricks break during cutting and handling, corners require cut pieces, and small batches often run short. It is far cheaper to have a few extra bricks than to run short mid-project when the same lot number may be unavailable. Order an extra 10% and return unopened pallets if your supplier allows it.
Brick Types and Their Uses
Common face bricks are used for exterior walls where appearance matters. Engineering bricks are denser and more water-resistant, used below the damp-proof course or in retaining walls. Firebricks withstand high heat and are used in fireplaces and kilns. For patios and driveways, pavers are purpose-made brick products that handle freeze-thaw cycles and traffic loads better than standard wall bricks. Match brick type to application — using face bricks below grade or in ground contact will lead to crumbling and moisture problems over time.

How many bricks are in a standard pallet?
A standard pallet holds 500–525 standard-sized bricks (8" × 4" × 2.25"). Larger or thicker bricks will have fewer per pallet. Brick suppliers sell by the pallet for large orders and by the individual piece or smaller quantity for repairs. If your estimate calls for 1,100 bricks, plan to order 3 pallets (1,500–1,575 bricks) rather than 2 pallets plus a small order — the extra material gives you the waste buffer and the supplier handles the logistics more easily in full pallet quantities.
How much mortar do I need for a brick wall?
As a rule of thumb, plan for 1 cubic foot of mortar per 35–40 standard bricks. For a wall using 700 bricks, that is roughly 18–20 cubic feet of mortar. Pre-mixed mortar bags typically mix to about 0.5 cubic feet per 60 lb bag, so roughly 36–40 bags for that project. Mortar mix ratio for standard brick laying is 1 part Portland cement to 4–5 parts sand with enough water to reach a workable consistency. Use Type S mortar for below-grade or wet applications; Type N for above-grade exterior work.
Does the brick bond pattern affect the quantity needed?
Yes, slightly. A running bond (rows offset by half a brick) uses the fewest bricks and least mortar, making it the most economical. A flemish bond or English bond alternates header and stretcher bricks, which can increase material use and cutting requirements at corners and openings. Decorative patterns like basket weave or herringbone for paving require more cuts and increase waste by 10–15%. Factor in the pattern when adding your waste percentage — simple running bond: 5–7% waste; decorative patterns: 10–15% waste.
