How Discounts Work

A discount is a reduction applied to the original price of an item, typically expressed as a percentage. For example, a 30% discount on a $120 jacket means you save $36, paying only $84. Retailers use discounts to drive sales, clear inventory, and attract price-conscious shoppers — especially during seasonal sales events like Black Friday or end-of-season clearances.

There are two types of discounts to be aware of: percentage discounts (the most common, e.g., "20% off") and fixed amount discounts (e.g., "$10 off"). This calculator handles percentage-based discounts.

The Discount Formula

Savings = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Sale Price = Original Price − Savings

For example: $120 item with 25% off → Savings = $120 × 0.25 = $30 → Sale Price = $90.

How to Use This Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

If you know the sale price and discount percentage, divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). For example: an item sells for $75 after a 25% discount — original price = $75 / 0.75 = $100.

What if there are two discounts stacked?

Stacked or sequential discounts are not additive. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off. Apply the first discount to get the intermediate price, then apply the second discount to that price. The combined effective discount is 28% (not 30%).

Does the discount apply before or after sales tax?

In the vast majority of retail situations, the discount is applied to the pre-tax price, and sales tax is then calculated on the discounted price. Always check the final receipt to confirm the tax was calculated on the sale price, not the original price.
